Birdlife, Lakes & Dunes
Mozambique’s quieter side
Birdlife, Lakes & Dunes
Around Matutuíne, nature does not need grand gestures. Coastal forest, dunes, lakes and wetlands lie close together. Often it is the wind, birdsong and the rustle of vegetation that first make you stop and listen.
For nature watchers, travel takes on a different quality here. Early in the morning, while the light is still soft, many bird species can be spotted. Walks and guided nature tours pass through habitats that change surprisingly quickly between ocean and inland landscapes.
Getting up early is worthwhile here. A packed schedule is not.
Good to know
Guided nature walks are especially worthwhile, as many bird species, dune routes and sensitive landscapes can easily be missed or disturbed without local knowledge. The best times depend on weather, light and season.

Maputo National Park
The park specifically lists bird watching as an activity and highlights its lakes, wetlands, coastal forest and rich birdlife.
